Happy Birthday, Harry…

Today we celebrated Harry S. Truman’s 125th birthday in grand style at the Little White House. In honor of his birthday, we had three different groups of people representing three of his most important decisions: the recognition of the state of Israel, the Berlin Airlift and the desegregation of the military.

One of the most charming speakers was Gloria Shusterman, the daughter of Truman’s longtime friend and business partner, Eddie Jacobson. It was Eddie Jacobson who engineered a meeting between Truman and Chaim Weizmann, leader of the Zionist movement, the ultimately resulted in the United States supporting the creation of Israel.

Following Mrs. Shusterman, was the introduction of the pilots and crewmembers of the Berlin Airlift. Among them as Col. Gail Halvorsen, the Candy Bomber, who shared heartfelt stories of his experiences during post war Germany. (video at the bottom of this page)

Finally, we had the privilege of having another group of American war heroes, the Tuskegee Airman. The Little White House had the honor of hosting them six years ago. These amazing men overcame discrimination and adversity to become one of the most decorated squadrons in the military. They too, shared wonderful stories with the guests.
